Four Things You Can Do NOW
1. Call Your Senators - Every Day!
Our Senators are Mark Warner (D) and Tim Kaine (D). Both have opposed many of Trump's Cabinet nominees, but we need Senate Democrats to fight the Republican agenda with every tool they have.
Calling our Senators - every day! - is how we show them the strength of our feelings, and our expectations for them, as our senators to fight for us.
Not sure what to say? We recommend this website for talking points on everything from Cabinet Nominees to protecting Medicaid:
2. Call Your House Representative
Our House Representative in the 9th District is Morgan Griffith (R).
As a member of the House, Griffith does not participate in Cabinet Member confirmations, but he is still our Representative and plays an important role in voting for Republican policy measures.
Representative Morgan Griffith:
Abingdon Office: 276-525-1405
Washington, D.C. Office: 202-225-3861

3. Join National Movements
WCDC is fiercely committed to democracy, but we are also a county-level organization and have a duty to focus on county issues. We urge our members to participate with federally-focused organizations, and to bring the calls to actions from these groups back to WCDC and to our community to engage those around them. Some recommended organizations include:
4. Participate Locally
What is happening in the federal government feels overwhelming - and it's meant to overwhelm us. Remember that even though you cannot directly impact the situation in Washington D.C., you are far from powerless. You can:
-
Volunteer with local organizations that help vulnerable populations - this includes food banks, low-cost medical clinics, law firms that work with immigrant populations, GLBQT ally organizations, etc
-
Shop at businesses owned by minorities or others targeted by the Republican administration
-
Donate money to causes being attacked by the Republican administration
-
Talk to your vulnerable friends and family. Make it clear you support them and offer both emotional and concrete assistance.
-
Talk to your friends, family and neighbors about what is happening and why you oppose it.
